Before Belgium made headlines around the world following the ISIS-backed terrorist attacks at capital city, Brussels, it was mostly known as the country where the international headquarters of the European Union (EU) and  North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was based.
But there's much more to Belgium than the EU, NATO headquarters, Jean-Claude Van Damme or The Smurfs for that matter (both characters have roots in Belgium).
Belgium is the home of several food treats enjoyed across the world. Here are 5 popular food items that trace their origin to Belgium.

It is believed the term "French" was introduced when British and American soldiers arrived in Belgium during World War I and consequently tasted Belgian fries. They supposedly called them "French", because the local language and the official language of the Belgian Army was French, thus they believed themselves to be in France.
