A baby has been born with Harlequin Ichthyosis
in India. Harlequin Ichthyosis happens to 1 in 300,000 babies in the
world and it is a condition where a baby is born without a skin.
The baby was born to a 23-year-old woman [name withheld] in the city of Amravati in central India's Maharashtra State at the Lata Mangeshkar Medical College and Hospital.
The condition leaves the baby with just thick white plates with layers of deep cracks covering the flesh.
In addition to the condition, the baby was born with two small holes for her nose, an inverted eyelid and no ears.
According to Mirror UK, Pediatrician, Dr Yash Banait stated
that the baby born with the condition would not be able to undergo skin
grafting because there is absence of skin on the body.
Banait added that the baby hasn’t developed any breathing problems, but is under check for cardiac related deformities.
“There is no skin
on the body, so skin grafting is not a possibility. But the baby hasn’t
developed any breathing problems lest she would have required to be
kept on ventilation.
"We will be undertaking a 2D Echo investigation to ascertain the cardiac deformities or anomalies, if any.
"The baby is not finding any difficulty in breathing and is now stable," Banait said.
He
stated that the baby would be required to moisturize her skin with
petroleum jelly, coconut oil and special nutritional supplement all her
life.
In 1984, a baby was born with similar disorder in Pakistan and is said to have lived till 2008.
