The incident renewed concerns over the security and safety of Egyptian Airports and Airspace after a Russian passenger plane crashed in Sinai in October 2015.

Russian officials reported that it was shot down by an explosive device and that a local branch of Islamic State is responsible for the attack that killed all 224 passengers and crew on board.

Another major air crash related to Egypt was in 1999 when an EgyptAir Flight 990 crashed near the Massachusetts Island of Nantucket into the Atlantic Ocean killing all 217 passengers and crew members on board. U.S investigators  filed a final report that concluded that the flight's co-pilot switched off the autopilot function on the plane and pointed Boeing 767 downward as Suicide. But Egyptian officials refuted the report of the crash as a Suicide Mision.
