Teenage Girl Sues Facebook Over Nude Photo

A teenage girl from Northern Ireland has sued Facebook after a nude image of her was posted on the social media platforms.

Solicitors of the 14 years old girl claimed the picture in question was obtained by blackmail and repeatedly posted online as a form of revenge.

The case which is believed to be the first of its kind in the world was read at a hearing in Belfast where the representative of the girl claimed that the image was put on a 'shame' page.

Facebook and the man who posted the image are being sued because according to her lawyer; republication of the photo should have been a "red-line" issue for the social media giant.

Damage Claims:
"A naked 14-year-old picture was being put on a shame page," the barrister told the High Court in Belfast.
"If they had blocked it all this subsequent publication of her naked image would not have taken place."

But a lawyer for Facebook argued the claim for damages should be dismissed, saying the company always took down the picture when it was notified.

The girl, still unidentified, is seeking damages for misuse of private information, negligence and breach of the Data Protection Act.
The presiding judge reserved his decision on an application to have the case paused.
